Generate AI descriptions for tables and views

You can generate descriptions for tables, views, and their columns from two locations in Dataedo Portal:

• The Overview tab of a table or view
• The Columns tab of a table or view

A single operation creates descriptions for both the table or view and its columns.

Generate descriptions in Dataedo Portal

From the overview tab

To generate descriptions for a table or view from the Overview tab:

1. Click the caret icon to the right of the button.
2. Select the preferred AI engine.
3. Click the button and wait a few seconds for the descriptions to generate.

From the columns tab

1. Open the Columns tab for the specific table or view.
2. Click the small arrow in the button at the top of the columns grid.
   • Select preferred AI engine.
3. Click the button and wait for the descriptions to generate.

Edit and save AI-generated descriptions

To modify a generated description, hover over the description tile and click the icon.

Available options:

• Save this description: Saves only selected descriptions
• Select all: Selects all generated descriptions for saving
• Save to AI description: Save to a dedicated AI description field.
• Save to description: Save to a regular description field.
• Discard: Discard the generated text.

AI-generated Descriptions in the overview tab

If you save the description using Save to AI description option, a new tile labeled AI Generated Description will appear on the overview page for the table, view, or column.

Now, you can:

• Keep the AI-generated text as-is.
• Copy the AI-generated text and paste it to the Description section (clicking the icon when hovering on it).
• Delete the AI-generated description by clicking the icon in the bottom right corner and selecting Delete.

AI-generated descriptions are marked with an icon. If a column has a standard and AI-generated description, the icon appears on the right. Clicking it displays the AI-generated text below the regular description.

To toggle AI-generated descriptions for all columns, click Show/Hide AI Descriptions.

Generating AI Descriptions from Dataedo Desktop

To generate descriptions in Dataedo Desktop, you must first configure AI Autodocumentation in the Dataedo Portal. For setup details, see Configuring AI Autodocumentation.

To generate descriptions:

1. Right-click the AI description field in the grid.
2. Select Generate AI Description in Dataedo Portal.

Alternatively, if there are no descriptions attached to an object:

1. Open the AI Description tab in the object overview.
2. Click Generate AI Description in Dataedo Portal.

If an AI description already exists, right-click it and select Generate AI Description in Dataedo Portal from the context menu.

After selecting this option, the AI Generated Descriptions window opens in Dataedo Portal. Follow the steps in Editing and Saving AI-Generated Descriptions above to complete the process.

Useful tips

tip

If the generated text is unrelated to the term or KPI, link it to other related terms. For example, link Rental to Movie to generate descriptions related to movie rentals.
